Sgt. Daniel Dyson, Officer Derrick Ruth, and Officer Ronald Tarentino were awarded the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Drive for Life Award.   The award recognizes officers for their commitment to enforcing the drunk driving laws and keeping the roadways of safe.  The photo shows the officers at the awards recognition ceremony which was held May 13, 2009 at the Devens Conference Center.   Chief Jim Hurley of the Leicester Police Department commended the officers for their enforcement of the drunk driving laws and noted that this is the third year in a row that the Leicester Police Department has had officers recognized by MADD.   Sgt Daniel Dyson has been recognized for the past three years by MADD while Officers Derrick Ruth and Ronald Tarentino received the award for the second year in a row.  Chief Hurley further comment that the award for Officer Ronald Tarentino had special significance this year as Officer Tarentino escaped serious injury when his cruiser was struck by a drunk driver while he was on patrol during the early morning hours of March 10, 2009.   We are pleased that Officer Tarentino was not seriously injured and the incident really brought home the reality that anyone, even a police officer operating a marked police cruiser can be the victim of a drunk driver.
